Short summary
Temperature observations in the upper atmosphere are sparse. Improved simulations of microwave radiance from oxygen, accounting for the Zeeman effect, guide channel design for a proposed hyperspectral microwave atmospheric sounder. Retrieval tests using simulated radiances showed slightly more accurate temperature profiles than those obtained using an existing sounder's channels. The design could provide richer temperature information with finer vertical resolution in the upper atmosphere.
