Short summary
Agricultural fertilizers can release ammonia into the air, reducing fertilizer efficiency and affecting air quality. We measured ammonia exchange between soil, plants and the atmosphere in a crop field after fertilizer application. Emissions were stronger during the day and weaker at night. Total nitrogen loss was about four percent of the applied fertilizer.
