Short summary
Small particles high in the atmosphere influence climate and the ozone layer. We assessed how well the European-Japanese EarthCARE satellite, launched in 2024, measures them by comparison with a reference instrument on the International Space Station and two ground stations, under clean, volcanic and wildfire smoke conditions. A method based on the satellite's measured signal proved reliable even at low particle amounts, unlike the standard product, and we recommend it for long-term monitoring.
