Short summary
While cloud droplet size distributions (CDSDs) of shallow cumulus or stratiform clouds are often well described under the assumption of single mode (gamma) distributions, CDSDs exhibit a multimodal structure in the presence of drizzle or rain leading to biases in passive remote sensing retrievals. Here, we present a new approach to derive multimodal droplet size distributions from aircraft-based polarized measurements of the cloud-/rainbow using a superposition of multiple gamma distributions.
