Short summary
A multi-channel fluorescence lidar can effectively analyze smoke–urban aerosol mixtures and retrieve smoke mass concentration in the planetary boundary layer (PBL), with a detection threshold of order 0.1 µg · m⁻³. Measurements over Moscow (2023–2024) detected smoke in 59 of 67 sessions. Long-range transported smoke contributed ∼1 µg · m⁻³ to the PBL, while regional fires from southern Russia caused concentrations up to 50 µg · m⁻³.
